Highlights

  • Upgraded multiple irrigation system controllers in 2021 to include weather-based controls and soil moisture sensors that dramatically reduced water usage dedicated to grounds maintenance. The expansion of irrigation clocks and rain sensors means that automatic shutoffs reduce unnecessary water consumption.
  • Uses electric-powered equipment whenever possible to minimize noise and emissions. The fleet currently includes an electric utility cart, electric mowers, snow blowers, and backpack blowers. The fleet of electric equipment will continue to expand as these technologies become increasinglyImage of electric snow blower commercially available.
  • While necessary for safety during icy and snowy conditions, salt impacts water quality when it enters sewers and waterways. In Fall 2023, Facilities changed its snow and salt management system, establishing limited salt zones and non-chloride product zones, using a vegetable brine solution for pre-treatment. This strategy not only maintains safety but also significantly reduces environmental impact, drastically reducing salt used on campus.
